Famous landmarks in Egypt

Follow the Nile from Giza to Luxor and Abu Simbel.

The Great Pyramid and the Great Sphinx share the Giza Plateau, so learning one map location supports both. Their forms remain unmistakably different: an enormous triangular outline versus a reclining lion-bodied figure with a human head. Give yourself time to identify the main subject rather than automatically naming every photograph of the plateau “the pyramids.”

Farther south, Karnak and Luxor Temple make a more demanding pair within Luxor. Repeated columns alone may not tell you which complex you are seeing; use the whole view and the profile’s recognition notes. Abu Simbel is farther south again, identifiable by monumental seated figures at its rock-cut entrance. This is a north-to-south collection, not five nearby Cairo attractions.

Locations: Giza · Giza · Abu Simbel · Luxor · Luxor. The landmark cards below include exact coordinates.

Read the map

Start with Giza beside Cairo, follow the Nile south to Luxor, and then look much farther south for Abu Simbel near Lake Nasser.

A small learning challenge

Use a three-stop memory route: Giza pair, Luxor pair, Abu Simbel. Practise separating the landmarks within each shared city group.
