Famous landmarks in France

Iron lattice, royal symmetry and an abbey above the tides.

Begin with three very different Paris silhouettes: the Eiffel Tower’s open metal frame, the Arc de Triomphe’s broad stone arch and Notre-Dame’s paired square towers. Looking for the shape first is more useful than treating every pale stone building as the same clue. The Palace of Versailles adds a different challenge: a long, formal palace rather than a single object rising over the city.

Mont-Saint-Michel changes both the scenery and the map. Its tightly packed buildings climb toward an abbey above the surrounding tidal landscape. It belongs with Normandy, away from the Paris group. Use this collection to practise a simple distinction: recognizing a French landmark does not always mean placing your marker in Paris.

Locations: Paris · Paris · Paris · Versailles · Normandy. The landmark cards below include exact coordinates.

Read the map

Group the three Paris landmarks, place Versailles just to their west, then make a separate mental anchor for Mont-Saint-Michel on the northwestern coast.

A small learning challenge

Sketch five tiny silhouettes: lattice, arch, two towers, long palace and pointed island. Add a city or region beneath each sketch.
