Big Ben
London · Tower
London icons, a prehistoric circle and a Scottish stronghold.
London offers three easy-to-separate structures once you pay attention to their function. The landmark commonly called Big Ben has a clock face in a tall, narrow tower. Tower Bridge has two towers joined above the roadway. Saint Paul’s Cathedral has a large dome. Remember that Big Ben is the name of the great bell; the clock tower itself is the Elizabeth Tower.
Stonehenge takes you out of the capital to a stone circle near Amesbury. Its surviving horizontal stones resting on uprights make a useful recognition clue. Edinburgh Castle moves the game north to Scotland, with a fortress occupying a rocky height. This collection is a useful reminder that the United Kingdom includes more than London and that landscape can narrow a guess as much as architecture.
