Saint Paul’s Cathedral

Saint Paul’s Cathedral is a domed landmark in the City of London. Its large central dome rises above a columned drum, while two smaller towers frame the west front. Pale stone and classical forms distinguish it from the pointed Gothic architecture associated with many older English cathedrals.

The story behind the landmark

The Great Fire of London destroyed the earlier cathedral in 1666. Christopher Wren was appointed to rebuild it in 1668, and construction of the new cathedral began in 1675. Worship resumed in the quire before all the work was finished. The building was officially declared complete in 1711.

Wren revised the design as construction advanced rather than settling every detail at the beginning. The dome combines visible outer architecture with hidden supporting structure, including a brick cone carrying the lantern. The silhouette seen from London’s streets is therefore not simply the inner dome enlarged to the same shape.

How to recognise it

  • A large central dome rises from a tall ring of columns.
  • The west front has a classical portico between two smaller towers.
  • A slender lantern and cross crown the main dome.

Look twice: a useful comparison

Domed churches can suggest Rome, Paris or London. Match Saint Paul’s central dome with its columned drum and west towers. Avoid using pale stone or a cross alone; both appear on many buildings. A frontal and side view may emphasize very different parts of the cathedral.

A detail worth remembering

The outer roof, inner dome and concealed support are not one shell. Wren’s brick cone carries the heavy lantern above. That hidden engineering helps explain how the familiar skyline profile can differ from the dome worshippers see when looking upward from inside.
