Bab Mansour

Bab Mansour is the richly decorated monumental gateway facing El Hedim Square in Meknes. Its broad façade rewards a closer look: patterned tilework, a large central arch and pale columns work together. In the game, the overall gateway is more distinctive than any isolated fragment of mosaic.

The story behind the landmark

The gateway belongs to the imperial building programme associated with Sultan Moulay Ismail and his successor Moulay Abdallah. It was completed in the early eighteenth century. This is the period when Meknes developed the monumental royal character still visible in its walls, gates and palace remains.

The Meknes tourism council describes green-dominant mosaic, relief patterns and white marble columns around the large opening. These details turn an entrance into a ceremonial façade. UNESCO's account of the historic city places such monumental gates within a wider system of fortifications and imperial urban spaces.

How to recognise it

  • A broad decorated façade with one very large central arch
  • Green-dominant geometric mosaic surrounding the opening
  • Pale marble columns and substantial projecting side sections

Look twice: a useful comparison

Morocco has many gates named Bab, and other entrances in Meknes share its decorative traditions. Identify the broad façade and large central opening together with El Hedim Square. A tight photograph of a horseshoe arch alone cannot reliably separate Meknes from Fez or Marrakesh.

A detail worth remembering

The gate's surface is built from small patterned elements that become a coherent design at a distance. After recognizing the monument's silhouette, look closer at the mosaic: the same photograph can teach both city identification and how its decoration is assembled.
