The story behind the landmark
The mosque belongs to the Almohad transformation of Marrakesh in the twelfth century. Abd al-Mu'min commissioned the Koutoubia after the Almohads took control of the city. Its minaret became a lasting marker of the former imperial capital, whose medina contains monuments from several successive dynasties.
The tower rises approximately 77 metres. Moroccan tourism authorities identify it as a model for the Hassan Tower in Rabat and the Giralda in Seville. This family resemblance matters when identifying photographs: the buildings share an architectural tradition, even though their cities, later histories and immediate surroundings differ.
How to recognise it
- A tall square stone shaft with patterned arched panels
- A smaller square lantern above the main tower
- A warm coloured tower beside the low mosque and gardens
Look twice: a useful comparison
Hassan Tower and the Giralda can resemble the Koutoubia in a cropped photograph. Check the top and the setting before choosing a city. Rabat's Hassan Tower has a flat unfinished summit; Seville's Giralda has a much taller, elaborate belfry above its older shaft.
A detail worth remembering
The Koutoubia's design travelled beyond Marrakesh. Its relationship to Rabat's Hassan Tower and Seville's Giralda makes these three towers an excellent exercise in recognizing related buildings without assuming they are in the same country.
