Hassan II Mosque

Hassan II Mosque occupies a waterfront site in Casablanca, where a very tall square minaret rises above the Atlantic. The combination of a monumental tower, a broad prayer hall and open ocean is its strongest identity clue. A close-up of decorative tilework alone is less useful for locating it.

The story behind the landmark

King Hassan II laid the mosque's foundation stone in 1986. The completed building was inaugurated on 30 August 1993. Its architecture brings Moroccan craft traditions into a modern religious complex, combining intricate surface decoration with the engineering required for a building of this scale.

The mosque foundation describes the minaret's marble and zellige decoration, its internal lift, and the metal ornament at its summit. A laser at the top points toward Mecca. The tower and the seafront setting therefore provide two different recognition clues: one architectural, the other geographical.

How to recognise it

  • An exceptionally tall square minaret with decorative panels
  • A large mosque immediately beside the Atlantic shoreline
  • Green roof elements contrasting with pale stone and a broad esplanade

Look twice: a useful comparison

Do not choose Marrakesh simply because you see a Moroccan square minaret. The Koutoubia is inland and much smaller in scale. For Hassan II Mosque, the sea, the extensive waterfront platform and the proportions of the tower are stronger clues than the shared decorative language.

A detail worth remembering

The minaret's summit combines a traditional ornament of stacked spheres with a modern laser aimed toward Mecca. That pairing reflects the larger building: a contemporary project expressed through established Moroccan architectural forms and craftsmanship.
