Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. A robed figure raises a torch above a high stone pedestal. Its green copper surface, radiating crown and harbour setting are strong clues, but photographs of replicas can reproduce the familiar pose surprisingly closely.

The reference point is the original statue on Liberty Island, not Ellis Island or a replica.

The story behind the landmark

The statue was made in France, dismantled, shipped across the Atlantic and reassembled in New York. It was dedicated on 28 October 1886 as a gift expressing friendship between France and the United States. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the figure, and Eiffel’s company supplied its internal engineering.

Richard Morris Hunt designed the pedestal, which stands within the older Fort Wood structure. The sculpture’s copper skin is supported by an iron framework. Its green colour developed through oxidation; it was not originally created with a green exterior coating. The visible surface and concealed support are therefore different materials.

How to recognise it

  • A robed figure holds a torch high in one raised hand.
  • A pointed, radiating crown surrounds the head.
  • The green figure stands above a tall stone pedestal on an island.

Look twice: a useful comparison

The pose appears in many replicas. Examine the pedestal and surrounding geography as well as the statue. A tightly cropped torch or crown may identify the design without proving New York; the island setting and the complete monument provide stronger location evidence.

A detail worth remembering

The green surface comes from the copper’s reaction with its environment. Remembering the material explains the colour more reliably than treating green as a painted decoration. Beneath that thin exterior, a separate structural framework supports the enormous figure.
