The story behind the landmark
The current Parliament House opened on 9 May 1988, replacing the provisional building used since 1927. The winning design by Mitchell/Giurgola & Thorp placed the structure within Capital Hill rather than simply on top of it. Its architecture aimed to combine parliamentary functions with a strong public and landscape relationship.
The Parliament's description of the flag mast explains its position at the intersection of the building's principal axes. The mast rises above the roof and gives a visible focus to the Parliamentary Triangle. The roof, building and mast should therefore be read together instead of treating the flag structure as a separate monument.
How to recognise it
- A tall four-legged stainless-steel flag mast above the building
- A broad low structure integrated into a grassy hill
- A symmetrical pale entrance beneath the mast and roof landscape
Look twice: a useful comparison
Old Parliament House is a separate, lower white building nearby, used before 1988. Australia's capital is Canberra, so do not place the current Parliament in Sydney or Melbourne. The large flag mast and roof integrated into the hill identify the modern building.
A detail worth remembering
The design makes the roof part of the landscape above the parliamentary spaces. The flag mast then marks the intersection of major axes below, showing how an easily recognized skyline feature also expresses the building's internal organization.
