The story behind the landmark
Agrippa commissioned an earlier Pantheon in the first century BCE. The surviving structure was rebuilt under Emperor Hadrian in the second century CE. Its porch preserves Agrippa’s name, so the inscription and the date of the present building do not refer to the same construction campaign.
The building became the Christian church of Santa Maria ad Martyres in 609, helping preserve it through later centuries. The rotunda’s height and diameter are both about 43 metres. Its roof culminates in an open oculus, and drainage openings in the floor deal with rain entering from above.
How to recognise it
- A triangular pediment rests above a deep granite-columned porch.
- A huge circular rotunda rises immediately behind the portico.
- Inside, stepped coffers surround a round opening at the dome’s summit.
Look twice: a useful comparison
The Pantheon in Rome and the Panthéon in Paris have similar names, but very different silhouettes. For Rome, look for the low classical porch attached to a rotunda, or the open oculus inside. A generic columned façade is not a decisive clue.
A detail worth remembering
The opening at the top is not glazed. Rain can enter the rotunda, where the floor provides drainage. That everyday detail makes the oculus easier to remember: it connects this ancient interior directly with the weather and changing daylight above Rome.
